Don't forget to use the appropriate jumper setting for older motherboards May 27, 2010 Jillian Kimberlin (Milwaukee, WI) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I first bought these, I was worried that they both came DOA. Kind of weird to get TWO lemons at once, but I guess that's how it works, sometimes. Well it ended up that this wasn't the case, instead it was the fact that my old-ish motherboard, the ASUS A8V Deluxe, wasn't recognizing these harddrives because I had left them on the default setting. Instead, when I put the jumper in position 7-8, forcing the drive to be 1.5g/s instead of 3.0 g/s, it worked like a charm!
PROS --
1. Ease of use - As soon as I put in the jumper cable, this harddrive worked like a dream. My ASUS motherboard was able to detect it rapidly and I formatted it very quickly for easy use.
2. Installation - It's a 3.5" harddrive. Installation was just like an other harddrive, not harder nor easier than anything I've ever owned before in a SATA harddrive. It's my motherboard I would put as a con as far as the positioning of the SATA slots, but that's another review!
CONS --
1. Bare drive only - Yeah, I know it shouldn't really be a "CON", but really, the harddrive is lonely. Wouldn't it be better if they included a cable or harddrive screws or something to keep the harddrive company while it was being shipped?
2. Amazon = Pricey - There are other means of buying this harddrive, but I'm not one to bash Amazon too much. Their prices are usually fair, but for this harddrive, it is being sold by a third-part vendor so I think you can easily go somewhere else and get it for about 20 bucks less...
I ended up buying two of these babies, and they are still going strong. Would I recommend Amazon to buy computer parts? Probably not. Would I recommend these harddrives? Absolutely!
Great Hard Drive, although potentially slower than others May 27, 2010 B. Kilpatrick (Louisiana, USA) I have purchased several of these drives to use in my Drobo: Data Robotics Drobo 4-Bay USB 2.0/FireWire 800 SATA Storage Array DR04DD10. I have not had any problems with the drives for this purpose. All drives arrived in good, working condition and were very easy to setup. I have had these drives for over a year with no problem.
I use the Drobo as a Backup solution, so speed is not my primary concern. It does seem to respond more slowly than other single-drive firewire devices that I have attached. This is only typically a problem when I'm using the Drobo after not using it for a while. I assume it may be due to the power saving features built into this drive. But, perhaps it's something to do with the Drobo. I don't want to give either item a bad reputation since I'm not sure which is the culprit. However, for backup use, this combination is perfect.
A side note about my system. I am using a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard. My other external drive is a WD Caviar Black:Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD1001FALS in an Icy Dock Enclosure. The model I have was replaced with this one: ICY DOCK USB & 1394 Single Bay Ext Hard Drive. I have used several of these enclosures and have great success with everyone that I've used. I actually just purchased one of the newer Icy Dock enclosures, so I will write a review about it after I have used it for a while.
Working ok May 20, 2010 G. Farney (Coventry, CT United States) Installed a pair of these units into a Synology NAS in a RAID1 set up (dual redundant disks) and it's been working fine. I was going to install two more and make it RAID5, but some of the reviews have me holding off. I've had no problems, and the drives are 90% full, they run quiet and cool.
Quiet and cool April 30, 2010 J. Cooper (Zionsville, IN) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had the WD7500AADS for about a month now, installed in an Icy Dock external firewire/USB enclosure. The drive serves as the Time Machine backup of my office computer, so it performs automatic backups multiple times per day. So far, it is working flawlessly. It replaces a 500GB Seagate 7200.11 drive, and it is so much quieter and cooler than the Seagate that I can hardly believe it. Really an excellent drive, and one to get if you're concerned about the block size issue on the newer Caviar Green EARS drives.
